DELISA: Since coming onto the scene in 2017,
Lil TJay has had an impressive rise with the fiery collab “Pop Out” and slew of solo hits
– proving that he has his eyes set on making a name for himself in hip-hop. DELISA: In late 2017, Tjay hit the scene with
his melodic anti-love anthem, “Resume” that quickly blew up on Soundcloud. DELISA: In order to stand out, he used a method
pioneered by viral sensation Soulja Boy. SOULJA: I’ll upload “Crank Dat” to Limewire
and I’ll title it 50 Cent, “In The Club,” they’ll go download that song for free and they think
they’re going to hear 50 cent in the club and they hit download, hit play, they hear you! DELISA: But instead of 50 Cent, he used Uncle
Murda’s ‘Rap Up,’ series. TJAY: I think right before 12 o clock, I put
Uncle Murda, “Rap Up” and I threw “Resume” up. That shit racked up some views. DELISA: Along with rappers like Drake and
Meek Mill, Lil Tjay drew inspiration from R&B artists like Usher and Justin Bieber to
create his sound, citing the latter as a model for his career, saying quote: DELISA: He even flipped the Canadian pop star’s track on “None Of Your Love.” DELISA: Lil Tjay focused his melodies around
his real-life experiences, from his relationships… DELISA: …to reflecting on his upbringing
in New York and time spent behind bars in 2016. TJAY: This time last year I was locked up. I was locked up. I had no songs out. I just had a dream; I had a plan, that’s it. When I say it could’ve been lights out, I
could have been locked up for a lot more time. It’s just I’m blessed. DELISA: 2019 has brought a number of career-defining
moments for the teen rapper. DELISA: In January, he teamed up with Chicago
rapper Polo G for their breakout hit, “Pop Out.” DELISA: “Pop Out” has
racked up over 134 million views on YouTube to-date and became the soundtrack for a number
of TikToks. They even stopped by Genius for a performance. DELISA: Keeping the momentum rolling, the
Bronx native hopped on French Montana’s “Slide” in April. DELISA: In August, Lil Tjay dropped his debut
mixtape ‘F.N’ which featured a mix of old and new tracks that presented a concise
melodic portrait of himself. TJAY: I speak about stuff I been through. I don’t talk about stuff that’s fake. I speak from the heart. Every lyric got a meaning behind it. DELISA: It’s still early for the teen rapper
but Lil Tjay is hungry and ready to continue his rise to the top. TJAY: What motivates me to make music is when
I drop a song and I see everybody reposting and everybody hype. It just make me want to make more. I want to keep getting that reaction because
this was a dream. This was something I dreamed about. DELISA: I’m Delisa with Genius News bringing
you the meaning and the knowledge behind the music.
