What Would You Do – Amazon/Google Interview Question

What Would You Do – Amazon/Google Interview Question

– What would you do? It’s a dark, stormy night, snow is coming
down. It’s minus 25, it’s freezing cold, and you’re
driving by a bus stop. And at the bus stop, you see three people. One, you see one of your friends, that once
saved your life. You see an old lady, who looks like she’s
really struggling. She looks like she’s dying. And you see your dream partner, the person
you’ve always wanted to be with. And as you’re driving by, you’re driving in
a Smart Car, so you only have one spot for another person. Do you pick up your friend, and repay them
for once saving your life? Do you pick up the old lady and drive her
to the hospital, and save her life? Do you pick your dream partner, so you can
spend the rest of your life with them, because you know if you don’t pick them up in this
moment, you will never see them again. And so what would you do? What would you do, pause the video. Pause the video right now and go in the comments
and comment. Comment what would you do? Would you pick up your friend, would you pick
up the old lady, would you pick up the dream partner? This question was actually asked in a competitive
interview process. It was interesting ’cause it’s supposed to
try and understand our decision making. And I know a lot of you are thinking, obviously
I’m loyal to my friend. I woulda picked up my friend ’cause he once
saved my life, and this is what I gotta do for ‘im. Some of you are more lovers and you’re like
no, this is my dream partner, I gotta go and I gotta be with them. I gotta pick them. Some of you are saying well no, the moral
answer to all of this is I gotta pick up the old lady and I need to show that decision
making, because we need to save her life. What’s really interesting, is most of us choose
from the options that we’re given. But the winner of the interview did not. His answer was, I would give my keys to my
friend, to get him out of the cold, and get him to take the old lady to the hospital. And I would wait at the bus stop with my dream
partner. And that was so interesting because in this
one way, we’re able to solve all the problems. In this one way, we didn’t have to make it
a trade off. We didn’t have to make it I choose this, or
that. But how many times in life do we just pick
the options that we’re given. How many times in life do we just say, well
you’ve gotta do this, or this, or that. And we feel like we have to choose from one
of them. We have to go to school or we have to go to
work, or we have to, or we have to, have to, have to, but these are the options that life
gives us. Many times, just like the riddle, we can create
a fourth option and we can create a creative option. Especially ’cause most of us look at life
as life is not fair. As it’s win or lose situations where if I
do this, I can’t have this. Where if I take the friend, I can’t save the
lady. Where if I take the dream partner, I can’t
save the friend. But life is actually abundant. It’s full of win-win situations. Situations where you can get the friend and
the old lady out of the cold and you can spend time with your dream partner. And so ask yourself this, as you’re thinking
this through, and as you’re like oh my god, how didn’t I think of that answer? Ask yourself where else in your life are you
simply choosing from the options that have been given to you and not creating another
route for yourself.
