Voices on Teaching: “You saved my life” — Appreciation like no other profession

There is an appreciation
that you will get from being a teacher that you will not get in any other
profession. And it’s unspoken. You can’t put your finger on it. You can’t draw a picture of it. But it’s a feeling. When the child that was the hardest one
that you’ve ever taught, comes back five, seven, ten years later, and says, “Thanks, you saved my life. I’m now a “insert profession.” And there’s no dollar figure you can put on that. There’s no way to say it’s a certificate or an award of any type. Because it’s when you have an individual that says
something like that, something so powerful, it’s one thing to say you
helped me be a better person, and it’s one thing to say you know I’m successful
because of you. But when the child comes up to you, the child that was the hardest
child for you to teach, comes back and says to, “You saved my life.” There’s no way to put an explanation to that. You have to experience it, and
that’s what I want people to know.
