U.S. immigration authorities resume accepting requests under DACA

U.S. immigration authorities have resumed
accepting renewal requests for a program that shields young immigrants brought to America
illegally as children from deportation. The decision comes days after a federal court
temporarily blocked President Trump’s attempt to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood
Arrivals, or DACA, program. Congress is debating whether or not to write
new legislation that would grant legal status to these immigrants, referred to as dreamers. However in a Sunday tweet, President Trump
blamed the Democrats for a stall in talks over a potential deal. He said, “DACA is probably dead because the
Democrats don’t really want it, they just want to talk and take desperately needed money
away from our Military.” Republicans are opposed to the Democrats’
request to include immigration in a government funding deal, which is nearing its Friday
deadline.
