Resume Must Haves | DON’T MISS THESE 7 RESUME ESSENTIALS!

What are the key elements every resume
must have? In this lesson I’ll share seven resume must-haves plus the “Mother Of All Resumes”, which is how one self-described Texas redneck talked
about the resume format I’m going to share with you at the end of this video
so stick around at the end I’ll tell you how to get a Microsoft Word, Google Docs
and Mac Pages template for free that you can download so that you can create your
very own “Mother Of All Resumes”. Hello Happily Employed Rock Star, I’m Robert
with TheMagicCoverLetter.com and you are in the right place to learn the
secrets to getting a better job. Click the red subscribe button and let’s get
started. Here are seven resume must-haves: First
your resume must be clearly focused on showcasing anything you want your future
boss to remember about you, your unique selling points. Cut out anything that
does not serve that purpose. Remember the most important goal of your resume is
not to tell them everything you’ve accomplished all the great things but
enough of the most important things that will cause them to want to invite you to
an interview. That’s really the goal of your resume combined with your Magic Cover Letter. Second your resume must include concise descriptions using
active language and strong verbs that show your results, your achievements and
your impact. In an upcoming video I’ll talk more specifically about words that
are overused in resumes as well as powerful words that are a good idea to
use in your resume. Front-load each achievement with the result first and
then describe how you did it. Use numbers where possible because numbers
communicate results and everybody wants to hire someone who can get results. Bullets are preferable to long paragraphs. Your goal is to have short
stackable one-liners. Third your resume must focus more on the results of the
tasks you completed then on the completing of the tasks themselves. So
for example: 30% increase in sales revenue is focused on a specific outcome
that you achieved. Compare that with: Increased sales calls
by 30%. Fourth and this one’s kind of a no-brainer your resume must also include
your name and email and phone number. Now it’s also recommended that you
include the link to your LinkedIn profile if you have one as well as the
city and state in which you live. Fifth your resume must be in the format that
will work with the applicant tracking system of the company to which you are
applying. I recommend that you follow whatever
instructions they provide to the letter while you’re formatting your resume
which means you may have to make some tweaks to the “Mother Of All Resumes” that I’m going to share at the end of the video. Here is an insider tip: while
you are making arrangements to go through the formal applicant tracker
system of a particular company do everything in your power if possible to
send your resume and Magic Cover Letter directly to the individual who will be
your new boss. This sets you apart from other candidates and can give you a big
advantage in landing an interview. Sixth your resume must have perfect spelling,
perfect grammar and appropriate use of the English language. I recommend you
hire a professional editor unless this is an area of strength for you. Seventh
your resume must be as short as possible. For most people this means one
to two pages in rare cases three pages long. These are the seven resume
must-haves. Some other things that are optional but may make sense to include
depending on the job and what kinds of strengths or experiences you want to
showcase would be things like your education, any awards you’ve won,
affiliations, volunteer experience or community service. And now I’m really
interested in hearing from you: What is the biggest struggle or question you
have about your resume? Drop your question in the comments below and I’ll
do my best to answer it as quickly as I can.
