PA School Interview – Prep & Tips!

PA School Interview – Prep & Tips!

hi everyone welcome back to my channel
healthy adventure today we are going to talk about acing your PA
school interview don’t forget to watch my prayer deal on how to get into PA
school I know you’ll like it if you do be sure to give this video a
thumbs up share with your friends and subscribe to my channel and my social
media I’m wearing red my power color you know since we’re talking about
interviewing I thought it would be appropriate so we got to know what to
expect for our first physician assistant school interview right the first one you
ever going to is going to be the most nerve-wracking don’t worry I believe in
you you got this you can do all the research you want all the googling and
reading on the forum sometimes they are helpful sometimes there are people who
unfortunately want to scare you and give you false info so just take everything
you read with a grain of salt I have gone to maybe about I think six
interviews and I applied to about nine to ten schools
generate all of them have a similar type of setup generally it does take a big
chunk of your day probably around 8 a.m. to about 3 to 5 p.m. they usually start
you off with a light breakfast eat something like get the butterflies all
your stomach talk to feature potential classmates of yours it’s really nice to
talk with them they’re on the same boat try to be a stress reliever it’s also
nice to meet people who are in the same position as you there is two ways
schools generally do this or sometimes they do both single person interviews at
your one-on-one with one or two members of the faculty that’s what I like better
group interviews in my opinion a little bit more intimidating it’s almost like
you’re competing against the other person going head-to-head when do you
talk when you not talk some schools do one or the other some schools do both
generally there’s also a point of the day where you are either peer reviewed
by a current student or you go to lunch and just mingle with the students this
is a great opportunity to get a feel of what the program is like again they are
interviewing you but you are also interviewing them because every peer
program is go to be different or ideal for everyone
else depending on what kind of personnel you have so take this opportunity to get
a feel of how they liked the program how the program is set up if it’s meant for
you and ask them any questions concerns about your studies that you may have
usually you also get to tour the whole facility the school and they usually
tell you about the program set up that statistics they look at so make sure you
take all this information in so generally that’s the whole setup of the
day it’s a long day stressful day so I end the day be sure to treat yourself to
a nice dinner massage just relax and take it easy afterward so my first tip
is to learn about the school be sure to read about their mission statement this
is a question that almost every program asks number two bring something to write
down a lot of people bring one of these black folders with a little notepad
they’re gonna give you a wealth of information it also looks good when you
write down some of the information that they present to you before are going to
interview think of two or three questions you want to ask the program at
every program interview there’s going to point where they ask you if you have any
questions it’s gonna be more memorable if you have something to say and I need
to bounce off of it shows that you’re interested and intrigued in the program
this is a huge one you want to be prepared and have a question for
everything mock interview is a great way to do this either with a parent or a
friend your admissions counselor I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to do
this don’t sound too rehearsed you want to
roll with the punches but you also want to be prepared a lot of schools tend to
ask about the same questions they always start off with telling us a little bit
about yourself just a couple brief symptoms is a who
you are where you’re from what they’ve done something unique about you that’s
the ends all just a nice conversational topic you know not all business but
something may be a fun factor about yourself that they can play off of later
they’re gonna want to make sure you know what a PA is why you want to be a PA of
course you’re playing you want to be a PA but what’s your reason why are you in
it for the right reasons many programs
like to know why you choose PA over NP nurse or doctor you want to be
up-to-date and know about the current healthcare policies probably we’ll ask
you about a five or ten year plan and another biggie is knowing your three
best qualities and your three worst qualities sometimes they also try to do
a little bit of stress interview they give you a tough situation like if
you’ve killed a patient what you would do or if you made a mistake or they ask
you about one of the most difficult choices or difficult obstacles you had
to go through during a previous job you may have so the goal of this is to not
just do word vomit because you’re stressed tell them the truth but also
follow up on how you can make the best of that answer how you can improve so
that’s really what they’re looking for for those trick-trick questions you also
want to make sure you’re dressed to fit the parts look good feel good do good so
for ladies you want to probably wear button-up the suit jacket combo if you
wear a skirt make sure it’s below the knees wear a nice payoff pair of flats
or heels that’s great for the men a lot of times in front of working in
admissions department they dress up when their suit jacket like shirt I do not be
the person that comes in jeans and the t-shirt I’ve seen this before and it’s
pretty much interview suicide now now comes the fun parts the
interview we did talk about this before they are going to start off with telling
you about yourself so be sure you have this question nailed down while you’re
interviewing make yourself comfortable sit down take off your purse take off
your coat make sure your feet are flat they’re not cross your arms are crossed
like this they’re in the neutral position you want to make eye contact
look at the person don’t slash your shoulders keep your shoulders up some of
this or common-sense things but it’s funny because when you get nervous you
just don’t know what you do try not to say try not to say like record yourself
when you interview it’s crazy how often you say
um like yeah as fillers it is definitely very surprising so be sure to take note
of that when you first meet someone – be sure to shake everyone’s hand now the
fluffy handshake you know firm handshake eye contact generally
shake with the right hand smile and just get to know the person
don’t be a stiff just be yourself relax you got the interview you got another
pointer someone gave out to me that I really liked is sure it’s a lot of
business you don’t want to be too serious answer their questions but if
you see something interested in the room you’re interviewing in be sure to you
know bring it up if you see a picture of a park if you see a cool postcard ask
about their travels people like when you can make connections like if you and
your interviewer went to the same school both like the outdoors both like a
certain hobby just bring it to the light it’s of course another way for you to
stand out and make a lasting impression and show that you have the brains and
the smarts that’s why you get the interview but you also have to be a
people person to be in this profession and be able to keep a light-hearted
conversation going and be interesting at the same time last but not least don’t
forget to think everyone they’re thanking the secretary thinking all the
professor’s thinking the students be sure to ask for emails business cards
that way I would say within a good 24 hours be sure to send a follow-up email
to thank them for their time not they are a high choice on your application
list that way they remember you and it’s also nice you know they took the time to
interview you to sacrifice their weekend to meet you
so just be sure to make that lasting impression I wish everyone the best of
luck on their interviews because this is probably the time of you you are going
to get your interview invites in the mail don’t fret if you haven’t gotten
one yet they tend to do most schools do rolling you might hear as early as
August some interview into well into February or March so don’t fret you got
this any questions drop them below any future video your ideas you would like
to see let me know and see you guys next time
