Design Your Search – Elizabeth Ortiz, ’19

I can say that a beginning of my senior year, I came into the mentality with saying that, you know what? I’m going to graduate. I’m going to be unemployed. I mean, I don’t know what I’m going to do
with my life. Like, what comes after this? [music] My career educator Amanda, she’s the one who
said, you know what, you need to stop. You need to stop thinking like that, you need to start thinking about yourself and what you want. You need confidence. And I was like, yes, I do, but I just don’t
know how to get it. I was just so lost. The one thing that really, really did help
me that Amanda told me to do was go on to D2L to the DYS Program, look at the modules and actually get information from there and practice. Getting more, you know, information, the deeper into the program I was just like, you know what, it’s my time to take advantage. I need to stop procrastinating. I need to start looking what my next career
choice is going to be, what I’m going to do after graduation, I need to stop. I need to take advantage of this and this
is when I started, you know, meeting Amanda more and emailing her more and asking her
questions, and suggestions and any, everything. What I really, really liked was that the resume
one, the one that helped me actually create and build my resume, ’cause I had a resume
but it was, just like, you know, just thrown in information, and actually that module really
helped me a lot. The program is the one that I can say provided
me that next step, that guidance that I needed. I actually did go to the Career Fair and I
went to several stations that I was really interested in. And then I was just like, okay, so Career
Fair is done. I feel good. You know my interviewing was good. I felt just positive. So then the next day I got a call. And I was just like, okay this is weird. And they’re like, okay this is Cyracom and
we’re calling you to see if you’re still interested in a position with us and if you’re ready,
if you’re ready, we can do your first interview now. And I was just like, ah, I’m not ready! With all the skills that I got from the
module, the interviewing module, I was able to just focus, like, be confident, and just
focus on them. Then they scheduled me for the second one,
which was, like, a mini-test. I passed it and then they called me, let’s
just say days later, saying that I got the job. And that’s when I just came running to Amanda
and was like, Amanda I got it! I don’t know. I don’t know what would’ve happened to me
after graduation if I hadn’t been in the program. [music]
