Cheneille gets an opportunity and impresses her new boss, thanks to Youth Jobs PaTH

Before I started working
here, I didn’t really do much. A lot of the time it was really boring, sitting around, doing nothing
all day isn’t really much fun. When I was doing childcare,
I was really interested in it at the start, and
then got halfway through it, and I was like, “This
really isn’t my thing.” I wasn’t enjoying it. I just decided to find
a different pathway. When I was trying to
think of something else that I would like to do,
it was definitely all hands-on kind of things. And I was like, I like cars, oh maybe I’ll give spray painting a go. I found out about the internship
through my job network. Erin from Workways suggested
to me that it was an option for me to do, and I
thought I’d give it a go. The very first day I started here, I was really, really nervous. I didn’t know anyone, and
I’m quite a shy person, but I adjusted quite well. Everyone was really welcoming. It made it a lot easier. During the internship,
I was sanding back cars, priming, sanding primer, masking them up, and occasionally painting parts as well. The extra money that I
got from Centrelink has, on top of my youth allowance payments really helped out, and
encouraged me more so, to stick to getting a job. Originally, the internship was
going to be for four weeks. And then, after the four weeks was up, I got put on as a part-time worker. Made me really proud to
finally have gotten a job. The four week trial we set was excellent, and by the end, we had made
the decision between us, that we would like to
employ Cheneille here. Since being here, I’ve
learnt a lot of new skills. There’s a lot more aspects to the job than I would have ever
thought before I started. There’s a lot of pride in what I do. It makes me feel really
proud to be able to say, you know, “I helped fix that.” Life now is a lot better. I’m a lot happier. I have motivation to do a lot more things than I did when I wasn’t working. I actually have goals and
things I’d like to achieve. If I was to have a friend
ask me if they should do the internship program,
I’d recommend it because it lets you give things a go. In a year from now, I can see
myself doing the same thing. And hopefully, do an apprenticeship.
