Au/Ra interview in Antigua by Nadia Dyson of Luxury Locations Magazine

Hello my name is Nadia Dyson from Luxury
Locations Magazine and today I’m in English Harbor with AuRa, an amazing
singer/songwriter. How are you? Thank you for having a meeting with us today.
So we last interviewed you four years ago; um so what’s been happening?
A lot a lot! Since then I’ve gotten an artist name which is AuRa, and dyed my hair green. Which is awesome it by the
way. For three years now, its definitely part of what I do, and performed a lot, and five opening act tours. Wow!
A couple headline shows, lots of festivals a couple campaigns with brands
like Super Dry. You’ve been busy! A lot of cool stuff happening, yeah really loving it. So I wanted to talk to you about Panic
Room, which is your amazing single that has gone silver in the UK. Number one
in the dance charts in America. How is that? It’s crazy, its really weird, and Im really grateful that it has had the success it has. Its really strange especially
playing it live, and having people recognize it, and think, “I love that song”. I think I haven’t even
really like registered that it’s yeah well it’s like an anthem in Ibiza how is that
that’s it’s strange because I was actually born in Ibiza so I went back
there this year for the Radio 1 performance what I panic room with camel
fat yeah are the DJs and it was so crazy like I like hearing people sing along so
yeah I wrote this song like a year ago with me my team and we had no idea it
was gonna turn into it into that it’s an anthem now well duh so what was your
inspiration behind the song panic room um it’s actually really dark I at the
time was struggling with anxiety and it’s been part of my life unfortunately
for past couple years and I I realized that there weren’t a lot of songs that
talked about anxiety although it’s the main mental well the most common yeah
issue that teens have and actually yeah and yeah I just thought I need to talk
about any song because any what people needed to hear it I think especially
like when you’re going high school you experienced a lot of struggle with some
growing up can be tough and that just you know makes your anxiety worse and
yeah that was my way of coping with it was writing about it and it’s been
really cool to hear that people have actually like thinking when they really
do it and I mean the song like doesn’t say
like hey this is how you overcome your anxiety it’s like no this is what it
feels like and if you know that this is what you feel like then you know you’re
not alone other people like this so you said you might your own songs so
tell me about that process um basically yeah I’ve read my own songs I have a
team that I work with and I’ve worked with them for the past few years so all
the music that I make is comes from a very tight-knit consistent team where we
basically come up with the concept from scratch together in the room
do the production all together it’s like it’s very like a call like a family so
I’m getting calls us and I definitely I write a lot to be wrote on my own and I
come up with concepts and sometimes bring them into the room and say I want
this and this and you just write it it’s really it’s really cool and it’s like
therapy basically for me um I love being very involved and everything that has to
do it in a career um I write my own music video treatments and co-direct
them um I design my own merch I think it’s I
yeah I’m kind of a control freak so I really enjoy it like being involved in
and everything that’s how it should be idea yeah but a lot of times it isn’t so
it’s good that you get to have your creativeness you know however you want
it yeah that’s what you want and I’m really grateful that I’ve actually
gotten my creative freedom yeah trust me because in the end I am 16 and being
young in music industry can definitely be tough sometimes especially people
respecting you and knowing that even though you’re young like you still have
ideas I mean one of the like a good portrait of evolving creative stuff yeah
but I have a really great team around me who’s like allowed me to really do that ah so you’ve grown up in Antigua and I
hear now that you are a brand ambassador for Antigua how’s that it’s really cool
it’s an honor I’ve grown up here all my life and it’s really cool that now I’m
getting ways to like actually share Antigua when I go on tour and like
mention that I’m from here and be proud of it cuz I am and now I really get the
resources to do that which is really cool
amazing so I hear you’re going on tour soon Wow I’m well yet where are you
going – I’m going to the UK and Europe so we start in Germany and Frankfurt on
the 18th of November okay um and then and I think 27th of November in leave
amazed and this is your show oh no this is an opening act
oh and he is faithful hoping for a quality dinner okay and basically venues are probably the I
don’t know actually they’re the biggest venues that I’ve ever performed yet so
they’re all like 2,000 or 5,000 Wow okay we’re just really cool performing at the
o2 Academy in Brixton which is yeah yeah and do you know what songs are you gonna
be performing or you haven’t yet decided I’m definitely gonna be forming panic
room I’m also gonna be performing all the songs that I’ve released so I’m cute
with an EP actually I’m just called X Games so all the songs that are on many
p.m. you’re performing to there in a couple unreleased tracks fabulous
excellent oh I can’t wait to hear them oh well thank you so much for coming and
talking to us today and I wish you well in your tour and I hope that when you
come back you can come and see us again you
