After Rash of Murders, Police Resume Controversial “Safety” Checkpoints

NEWS 5. ANOTHER TACTIC BEING USED BY POLICE TO SOLVE THESE SHOOTINGS – SAFETY CHECKPOINTS. THESE HAVE BEEN CONTROVERSIAL IN THE PAST AND HAVE BEEN OPPOSED BY MAYOR SANDY STIMPSON. BUT NOW THE MAYOR AND POLICE CHIEF FAVOR THE STRATEGY.. AND THAT HAS SOME CITIZENS AND COUNCILMEMBERS ANGRY. HERE’S NEWS-5’S PETER ALBRECHT. With a dozen murders this month. Mobile Police are once again rolling out so- called safety checkpoints.. stopping cars to check seatbelts and insurance but really looking for guns and wanted suspects. Rich Landolt It’s allowed us to get a few guns and bad actors off the streets Last week a checkpoint near the RV Taylor homes on Broad Street netted 25 arrests and three seized guns. Gina gregory If the results are that they are getting weapons off the streets and getting people with outstanding warrants, then you have to look at the positives against the negatives. The negatives – that law abiding citizens are being inconvenience or harassed. and that the checkpoints may be targeting minority neighborhoods. Fred Richardson They’ll find something in any neighborhood they go in Councilman Fred Richardson opposes the checkpoints. Richardson We got meth labs in the western part of our city. And we don’t stop all of the citizens out there. We go find out who is operating this meth lab and we take them out. We need to find out who is shooting these guns and take them out. Richardson says the checkpoints further erode trust between police and people living in minority communities. The checkpoints were common place under former Mayor Sam Jones and previous Chief Micheal Williams. Mayor Sandy Stimpson previously opposed their use but has now changed his mind, telling News 5. “I oppose the widespread use of checkpoints, but I support Chief Barber’s plan to use them in targeted areas as part of a comprehensive strategy to fight crime.” And police say you’ll probably see more of these checkpoints in the near future. Peter Albrecht/News-5. BY LAW POLICE MUST NOTIFY THE PUBLIC AHEAD OF TIME WHEN AND WHERE THE CHECKPOINTS WILL TAKE PLACE.
